Our Story
Makerere Marketplace was founded by Balunywa Ali, a student at Makerere University, Kampala, who saw the gap between students who needed to buy and sell goods on campus — textbooks, electronics, fashion, food — and the fragmented, unreliable WhatsApp groups being used for commerce.
Built with Next.js, Node.js, and integrated with MTN MoMo and Airtel Money for frictionless Ugandan payments, the platform launched in 2024 and quickly grew to become the go-to marketplace for Makerere students and beyond.
Today, Makerere Marketplace hosts thousands of active listings across categories including Electronics, Fashion, Books, Food & Snacks, Stationery, and more — with verified sellers, AI-powered support, and same-day Kampala delivery.
